Smarthost with Sendmail

by J. Edward Durrett

Sendmail/FreeBSD

To use a smart host for your mail (forward all mail on one system to
another system for processing and delivery) add this line to
/etc/mail/freebsd.submit.mc

define(`SMART_HOST', `host.example.com')dnl

Then, in the /etc/mail directory:

make install
make restart

Much confusion about sendmail in general and smarhost in particular is due to not reading the documentation. The above aplies only to the sendmail submit program, MSP, which as a best practice should be used on systems that do not need a full blown mail server. There are two different sendmail configurations, one for submit and one for a full blown mail server. Editing one configuration will not have an effect on the other. I strongly recomend anyone looking to setup up Sendmail to stop using a search engine and read the documentation. Sendmail is a complex program but it does a lot and will do exactly what you tell it to do.
